World Rabies Day on the theme of Ending Rabies Death by the year 2030 was celebrated Isra University, department of Community Medicine on 22-09-2017 and 23-09-2017 in which following activities were conducted by the whole team of department of community medicine.
- Awareness lectures
- Research workshops on Rabies Awareness
- Health walk
- Field visit at a Basic Health Unit and a Secondary School of Hatri Village, Hyderabad. Rabies awareness talks for school students
- This is the 3rd World Rabies Day celebrated Isra University that is registered with Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), Government of Sindh and WHO.
- The awareness benefitted more than 40 000 population of Hatri Village in Hyderabad district, where Rabies vaccine is not available in the BHU and the villagers demanded that Rabies latest vaccine/cell culture vaccine be available in the BHU run by PPHI. Dr. Shoukat Memon is the Medical Officer and every month reported cases are near 30.
- Prof Hussain Buksh Kolachi in a lecture and video showed that, every minute 3 Rabies deaths are occurring and 300 people are bitten by the dogs every day around the globe. In Pakistan 60 000 dog bite cases occur every year and majority afflicted are children under 15 years of age.
- We must enhance Rabies vaccination and Rabies IGs be made available in all basic, rural and urban health care facilities in both public and private to achieve SDGs_3 that says, good health for all ages.
- Essay writing and competition, poster presentation were performed in the university as well as during the field visit accompanied by the following faculty, the team and 3rd year medical students.
- More than 150 MBBS students, the faculty and 200 secondary school students along with Dr. Shoukat Memon (BHU) and Mr. Liaquat (Head Master, school) participated in the walk and workshop sessions during the visit.
The students both of IU and the school thanked the honorable Vice Chancellor for this healthy activity of raising awareness for Rabies treatment and prevention and doing the day on World Rabies Day. They also thanked Vice Dean, Dr. Salman Kazi and Chairperson of community medicine department.
- Essay and poster writing competition was also organized by the department. The theme was “Role of Medical Students in community awareness for ending Rabies in Pakistan”. Following students participated and submitted their essays and posters within the final date.
